The fence is how fire reaches the house
In ember-driven fires, wood fences act as horizontal wicks. An ember lands mid-run, the fence carries flame to the wall, and the house ignites where the fence meets the siding. IBHS ember research has demonstrated this repeatedly in full-scale tests.
Chatsworth's western streets saw the pattern in October 2008, when the Sesnon Fire pushed embers across Box Canyon and the slopes west of Valley Circle Boulevard, destroying 15 residences and 63 outbuildings in the Porter Ranch and Chatsworth area.
That is why the fence rule is the sharpest edge of Zone 0: new combustible fences in the zone are prohibited immediately at adoption, with no phase-in.
What passes in Zone 0, what does not

- Tubular steel or wrought-iron style panels
- Aluminum privacy panels
- Corrugated or standing-seam metal on steel posts
- Masonry block, stuccoed or split-face
- Metal-framed gates with noncombustible infill
Rural-equestrian Chatsworth, the ranch parcels toward the Pass and along the old Santa Susana Stage Road alignment, often runs hundreds of feet of wood fence. The good news: corral and property-line fencing away from structures is not the target. The zone measures from buildings, not property lines.

Do I have to tear out my whole wood fence?

The standard moves are metal panels, steel or aluminum gates, and masonry. A common approach is a 5 foot noncombustible section where the fence meets the structure, matched in height and stain-adjacent color so the transition reads as a design choice.
When do existing fences have to change?
Existing combustible fences fall under Phase 2, on the City of LA's schedule, up to 5 years after final adoption. New combustible fences in the zone are prohibited immediately at adoption.
